Adventures in Berry Picking

Last weekend, I went to DFW with my college cohorts, Megalacishoria (whose further exploits you can read about here) to do some hanging out. Our big adventure for the weekend was going berry picking! which is something that I’ve been wanting to do for simply ages, and yes, I do find it ironic that I had to drive south 5 hours to Fort Worth and then back north an hour to Gainsville to accomplish this goal.

Fried Pies
An excellent precursor to our berry-picking excursion was stopping in downtown Gainsville to eat breakfast at the world famous “Fried Pie Company.”

The pies were indeed delicious, as was the rest of our breakfast.
Berry Farm

The berry farm was out on a dirt road about 20 miles deep into the east Texas countryside. We parked ON the road and walked in, because, as they say, the joint was hopping.

We decided that we would pick blue berries, as opposed to black berries, although the farm had plenty of both, because of the thorn issue (blackberries of course need to be carefully extracted from slighty thorny bushes.

This decision did not unfortunately save one of our party from encountering the ‘protection’ that lay inside one of the blueberry bushes. Alicia reached right into a wasps nest and had a rather swollen knuckle to show for it. Ow.

Lemonade OMG

After we had picked our half bucket of berries (more than enough for the coffee cake we planned to make), we grabbed a glass of blueberry lemondade to cool down with while we waited for our berries to be ‘processed’ which involved them riding down a conveyer belt, passing under a blast of air and being bagged…anywho, the lemondade was delish.

We packed it up shortly thereafter and headed back to the car, back to the city. The pregnant lady in our midst (Megan) was fading fast and the chubby of the group (moi) was in danger of melting. We were all glad to crank the air conditioner and cruise back to the air conditioned house, where a coffee cake was waiting to be made using our fresh berries.
And it was delicious- A filling end to a food-filled adventure.
