On taking 2 hour lunches

So, I have this new friend at work. We discovered that we both are into making beaded jewelry and have been spending more time together. Now, when I say that we both like to make jewelry, I mean that I like to make jewelry for ME and she likes to make enough jewelry for the entire state. I thought I was pretty snazzy with my carrying case of beads: I had the appropriate tools and a modest stock of vintage and new beads. And she, on the other hand, has to pack a CARRY-ON SUITCASE when she wants to take her beads somewhere. It is pretty amazing, she is a one woman beading superstore.

And speaking of super stores, during our beading get-togethers, we hatched this marvelous plot, that we would open an Etsy store! Brilliant! We just need a name. And I need to make some more inventory, because she’s got me beat by like 50 to 1 right now. More on the Etsy store as it develops.

So, in recent weeks, my friend has taken hostage to Hobby Lobby to buy beads, normally this happen on our lunch break. Problem is, I’m still hourly and she’s salaried. And, poor thing, she often works MORE than 40 hours and so she never has to worry about the propriety of taking a long lunch. The first time our trip to Burrito Hut turned into a Hobby Lobby run, with a detour to Micheals, I hadn’t clocked out, so…yeah. The 2nd time, it was intentional (I was having a bad week, and yes, feeling a little vindictive). But today, when I knew I was going to be taking a long lunch, I clocked out. And dammit, now I have to make that time up. Integrity sucks.

See, We’re in a new sermon series at church, and this week we talked about servanthood. The Hubs and I were discussing how I can be a servant at work (because there are days when I feel like a slave there). And as today’s lunch date approached, I knew that part of being a good employee, much less a servant-hearted one, was to practice honesty.  So, I guess I’ll have to tell my bead-crazy friend that I can’t go on any more long lunches, mostly cause I hate staying late.
